Screen Sharing & Camera Video

Screen sharing and camera video both run over the same voice connection, so there is nothing extra to set up. Join a voice channel first, then turn either on from the voice controls.

Sharing a screen

Connect to a voice channel and press Share Screen. Your browser or system asks what to share, and you can pick a whole display or a single window. Sharing a single window is usually the right choice, since it will not expose a notification that arrives mid-call.

Stop from the same button. Several people can share at once, and each share appears as its own video tile.

Turning your camera on

Press the camera button in the voice controls. Pick which camera in your audio and video settings if you have more than one.

Your camera never carries across a join. Entering a channel always starts with video off, even if you had it on in the last one. A camera that switches itself back on is not a surprise anybody forgives.

The call view

While you are looking at the voice channel you are connected to, a share or a camera feed fills the main pane. Move to another channel and it shrinks to a floating tile so you keep watching while you read somewhere else.

Video is scaled to fit rather than cropped to fill. A shared screen cropped to an odd aspect ratio cuts off exactly the corner somebody is pointing at.

What works where

If the share button does nothing

In a browser, check that you did not dismiss the picker, and that the site is on HTTPS. In the desktop app, check your version first. On Wayland, check whether an xdg-desktop-portal dialog is waiting behind another window.

System audio capture with a share is supported on Windows only. Elsewhere a share carries video and your microphone continues as normal.

Bandwidth

A screen share is the heaviest thing in a voice channel, and a self-hosted instance is limited by your server's upload rather than by anything in the app. If a call gets rough when someone shares, that is usually the ceiling you have hit. See Voice & Audio Settings for the input side.
